Asis is Director of Research and Publications at the Scalabrini Migration Center (SMC), a research center devoted to the interdisciplinary study of migration issues in the Asia-Pacific region (www.smc.org.ph). She completed her BA (Sociology) and MA (Demography) at the University of the Philippines , and her PhD (Sociology) at Bowling Green State University . She was Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology, University of the Philippines between 1990 and 1997 before joining SMC. Her major research interest is the study of international migration and social change. She has directed research projects on unauthorized migration, female migration, the impacts of migration on the left-behind children and families in the Philippines , and an assessment of the pre-departure experiences of Filipino migrants. She recently completed a study on the educational, work and life aspirations and migration intentions of young Filipinos. She is currently working on several papers dealing with migration and development, the development of migrants' associations and organizations among overseas Filipinos, and trafficking in Southeast Asia . She is Associate Editor of the Asian and Pacific Migration Journal and is Co-Editor of the bi-weekly Asian Migration News . She has published widely in journals/books and has participated in international conferences and expert group meetings. She also serves as a resource person and lecturer in various capacity-building programs of NGOs and international organizations. Aside from research and publications, she is also actively involved with SMC's work in advocating for migrants' rights, building networks with other NGOs, and strengthening linkages with other migration-related research institutions.
